COUPLE THERAPY

Everyone knows that relationships, even the most loving, can be challenging. Like our bodies, they need attention and regular checkups to stay in top form. When there is a problem, it’s best to address it right away to avoid further complications later on. We provide counseling services to couples struggling with communication problems, life's transitions, adjustment difficulties, conflict, and intimacy concerns.

PREMARITAL COUNSELING

Premarital counseling services are offered in a couples group and in private three-appointment couple sessions. Group sessions are scheduled periodically throughout the year. Individual couple sessions with staff therapists trained in premarital counseling are available Monday through Saturday. These three sessions include:

  1. The History of Our Relationship: Explores how the couple met and how they are experiencing the challenges of preparing for marriage. We consider some of the myths about marriage and introduce some recent findings from couples’ research.
  2. Considering Our Families of Origin: Focuses on the use of visual diagrams to map each person’s family of origin. Understanding one’s family history offers an opportunity to explore the effects families have had on the couple and their future together.
  3. Our Vision for the Future Together: Considers the strengths and challenges the couple has identified with a focus on enhancing resilience and building for the future.

Educational information, worksheets, and other resources are used to enrich the couple’s experience. Additional counseling is available if the couple wishes to explore issues in more depth or address personal concerns.

RELATIONSHIP CHECK-UP

Look around and you’ll see people – maybe even yourself – working on their physical fitness. We exercise, schedule our annual physicals, and get regular dental checkups. How many of us spend time improving our relationship fitness? Just like muscles, relationships need to be stimulated in challenging ways in order to grow and be flexible. Tuning up our relationships on a regular basis can improve couple longevity and satisfaction. Relationship fitness is the ability to grow stronger because of, not despite, challenges. It’s being in shape love-wise.

Group Therapy

Cathedral Counseling Center offers a range of group therapy options. These include peer-led and therapist-facilitated groups. Some groups are issue-specific while others are audience- or therapy-specific. Our services are offered without regard to religious affiliation, race, ethnicity, ability status, sex, gender expression, or sexual orientation.

Group Counseling Services

From peer-led to therapist-facilitated groups, we offer a number of therapy modules within the group therapy setting. That includes group counseling services that are issue, audience, or therapy specific, such as:

  • Psychotherapy groups address each member's interpersonal experience within a safe and responsive setting.
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) services. DBT is a comprehensive, evidence-based treatment program that blends cognitive and behavioral techniques with mindfulness practices.

Group therapy services like DBT can help reduce self-destructive behaviors, improve relationships, and increase effectiveness and fulfillment in many areas of life. Sometimes it is easier together, and often we have more to learn from each other than we realize. With our group counseling services, we promote and foster the benefits of growing, healing, and learning together.

PSYCHOTHERAPY GROUPS

Psychotherapy groups address each member's interpersonal experience within a safe, responsive and challenging setting.

At Cathedral, psychotherapy groups:

  • may be focused on a particular issue, like grief or young adulthood, or may be open to addressing what each member brings to the group
  • may be time-limited or ongoing, depending on the goals of the group
  • are structured to reinforce the strengths that each group member brings to the group while fostering further personal growth and interpersonal vitality

DIALECTICAL BEHAVIOR THERAPY (DBT)

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a comprehensive, evidence-based treatment program that blends cognitive and behavioral techniques with mindfulness practices. Developing DBT skills can help reduce self-destructive behaviors, improve relationships, and increase effectiveness and fulfillment in many areas of life.

Freddi Friedman, PhD, a nationally recognized expert, serves as Clinical Consultant for Cathedral's DBT program.
