Our Mission & History

Professional, Affordable Mental Health Services

Cathedral Counseling Center helps people make sense of their lives during difficult times through professional, affordable mental health care. Cathedral fulfills its mission by providing psychotherapy on a sliding fee scale based on income. Experienced clinicians participate in the mission by contracting their services at a portion of the market rate. We also build and support the professional community through our commitment to high standards and continuing education, training and supervision opportunities.

44 Years of Hope and Healing

Cathedral Counseling Center was founded in 1974 by a group of mental health professionals, diverse in their clinical and religious affiliations, who were dedicated to a holistic treatment model that addressed clients' psychological, medical, social, and spiritual concerns. These clinicians recognized a pressing and unmet need for therapy services and mental health care among people in low-to-middle-income households who could not afford care offered by private practice clinicians, and would not qualify for public programs.

Cathedral’s first director, the Rev. Anthony Henllan-Jones, was a clinical social worker and an Episcopal priest. He approached the leadership of St. James Cathedral and was given support in the form of donated space, funds and board members. Our reputation for affordable, high-quality comprehensive care is well-regarded in the mental health community.

In January 2014, Cathedral received the Organizational Excellence Award from the Illinois Psychiatric Society, the local branch of the American Psychiatric Association, for offering accessible care to underserved populations that would "otherwise fall through the cracks. "We maintain high standards for our staff, and are an accredited continuing education provider with the State of Illinois, offering regular opportunities for professional development of our staff and members of the mental health community at large.

All of our clinicians are licensed by the State of Illinois either as Licensed Clinical Social Workers, Licensed Professional Counselors or Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists.
