Group
Therapy
Beginning Therapy Group
Most clients start their therapy at the Center in the Beginning
Therapy Group. This is a small group therapy that provides both
an introduction to the agency, as well as an opportunity to begin
your therapy, participating at whatever level you feel comfortable,
sharing your concerns, and both giving and receiving support. The
group meets weekly and is co-led by two of our senior therapists.
You attend the group for three weeks, within which time the group
co-therapists are able to assess who of our staff of 25 would be
the best therapist for you, and you and the co-therapists can evaluate
which type of therapy would serve you best (individual, couples
or group). Assignment will then be made to the appropriate therapy.
Psychotherapy Groups
Ongoing psychotherapy groups address each group member’s interpersonal
experience and self- image within a safe, responsive and challenging
group setting. Groups are structured to reinforce the strengths
that each group member brings into the group while fostering further
personal growth and interpersonal vitality.
Clergy Consultation Groups
These therapist-facilitated peer support and consultation groups
provide a safe and engaging place for clergy to discuss professional
and personal concerns and to enhance their skills as spiritual and
community leaders.
Specialized Groups
Cathedral Counseling Center offers periodic specialized groups,
such as anxiety management groups, coping with depression groups,
and a bereavement support group. You can discuss your interest with
the Intake Counselor.
Anxiety Management Group
The Anxiety Management Group is a six week psycho-educational therapy group for people experiencing the symptoms and limiting effects of anxiety disorders such as panic attacks, agoraphobia, social phobia, obsessive compulsive anxiety disorder, and/or generalized anxiety disorder. Both psycho-educational and experiential in nature, the group is designed to help each group member identify specific factors which contribute to his/her anxiety and put together a personalized program of coping strategies.
Participants will have the opportunity to “try out” a variety of relaxation techniques, including mindfulness meditation. Past groups have proven to be a valuable adjunct to individual treatment and have successfully helped group members better manage their anxiety symptoms.
For more information or to sign up for this group, please call Michelle Hofmeister, LCSW at (847) 491-6829.
Couples'
Therapy
Several of The Center’s therapists have specialty training
and an interest in working with couples. We are able to provide
counseling services to couples struggling with communication problems,
transition/adjustment difficulties, and intimacy problems. In addition,
we offer the following specialized services for couples:
Pre-Marital Counseling
Pre-marital counseling services are offered in a couples’
group and individual couple sessions. A three session format is
provided, covering:
1.) The history of our relationship
2.) Considering our families of origin, and
3.) Our vision for the future together.
Educational information, worksheets and other materials are used
to enrich the couple’s experience.
After The Honeymoon: Navigating the Early Years of Marriage
This four session education and discussion experience is for couples
in the first years of marriage. Whether you’re feeling challenged
by the demands often experienced in early marriage, or wanting to
build upon the things you’re learning, this series provides
a safe place to give and receive support, gain knowledge, and learn
practical ways to manage the ups and downs of married life.
